Why Platinum For Water Features

Architectural water features are a different discipline.

A standard pool water feature gets ordered from a catalog and bolted on. An architectural water feature gets designed, engineered, fabricated, and installed as a single integrated piece of the home. Different conversation, different builder, different result.

Most pool builders in DFW will sell you a sheer descent or a bubbling fountain — picked from a vendor brochure, installed with stock plumbing, and finished with whatever stone the rest of the deck used. That’s fine for a starter pool. It’s not what architectural water features are.

What we build are the pieces homeowners and architects show us on Pinterest boards, in design magazines, on M|R Walls’ Instagram feed. Carved water walls. Sculpted spheres with concealed plumbing. Linear gas fire features running along a vanishing edge. Custom-fabricated steel armatures supporting cantilevered cascade features. Pieces that have to look right the day they’re installed and also look right twenty years later, which means engineering matters at least as much as design.

This kind of work requires three capabilities most DFW pool builders don’t have. First, the architectural fluency to read a designer’s drawings and a homeowner’s reference images and translate them into something buildable. Second, in-house structural steel fabrication — rare among DFW pool builders — to build the support structures, frames, and concealment that complex water features require. Third, the engineering discipline to make sure the pumps, plumbing, lighting, and water containment work for decades without becoming visible or audible problems.

We bring this approach across our work in Westlake, Southlake, the Park Cities, Grapevine, and the rest of the DFW area. Most of our architectural water feature work is for homeowners already collaborating with an architect, interior designer, or landscape designer — the projects where the water feature isn’t an upgrade, it’s the design intent.

What We Build

What we build as your architectural water features DFW partner.

Four practice areas account for most of our water feature work. Some clients come to us for a single signature piece — a Mario Romano wall, a custom sphere feature, a linear fire-and-water combination. Others integrate water features as part of a complete pool or backyard build. Either path starts the same way.

M|R Walls by Mario Romano

We install authentic M|R Walls by Mario Romano — CNC-carved Corian® solid surface panels with flowing water across patterned surfaces. The carved patterns (Reeds, Wave, custom designs) catch and direct water in ways flat surfaces can’t. Backlit RGB lighting optional. Installed indoors or outdoors with concealed plumbing and engineered substructure.

Sculpted Walls & Cascade Features

Original architectural water walls fabricated in our shop — stone-clad, board-formed concrete, steel-framed, or porcelain-tiled. Sheer descents engineered into the wall structure rather than mounted onto it. Cascade features sized and tuned to the room they sit in, so the sound carries without overwhelming conversation.

Sphere & Bowl Sculptures

Polished spherical water features, custom water bowls, and sculptural basin pieces — designed as focal points rather than supporting elements. Fabricated from acrylic, polished stainless steel, bronze, glazed ceramic, or stone depending on the architecture they sit beside. Engineered plumbing makes the water move; concealed mechanicals keep the piece reading as sculpture.

Fire + Water Combinations

Linear gas fire features running atop stone or stacked-stone water walls. Fire bowls floating over reflecting pools. Spillover spas integrated with fire-rim edges. The hardest combinations to engineer well — gas lines, ignition systems, and water-resistant electrical have to coexist within inches of one another, every joint, every connection planned for decades of use.

Our Differentiator

The single most important capability behind architectural water features isn’t visible in the finished work. It’s the steel.

Most pool builders in DFW outsource any structural steel work — the cantilevered armatures, hidden frames, mounting structures, and concealment elements that complex water features require. Subcontracting works for simple jobs. It falls apart on architectural pieces, where every weld, every bracket, every connection is part of the design intent and has to be coordinated with stone, plumbing, and lighting work happening simultaneously.

We fabricate our own structural steel in-house. Cantilevered roofs, floating fire walls, custom water feature armatures, sphere mounting systems, and the engineered substructure beneath M|R Walls installations — all designed, welded, and finished by our team before they go in the ground. That capability is rare among DFW pool builders, and it’s the reason we can take on architectural water feature work that other custom builders refer out or decline.

This is also why our water feature work integrates so cleanly with the homes it sits beside. The steel is engineered to the same tolerances as the rest of the construction. The water feature reads as part of the architecture rather than an accessory to it.

How We Work

A collaborative process — built around the design.

Architectural water features almost always involve a design team: architect, interior designer, landscape architect, or all three. We slot into that team rather than overriding it. Adrian leads every consultation personally.

01

Private Consultation & Design Review

Adrian visits your property and reviews any existing design drawings, reference images, or architect specifications you’ve developed. For M|R Walls projects, we walk through pattern selection, scale, and integration with the surrounding architecture. For original pieces, we discuss what the water feature needs to do in the space.

02

Engineering & Itemized Proposal

You receive engineering drawings showing the substructure, plumbing, electrical, and steel work — the parts that won’t be visible in the finished piece but determine whether it lasts. Plus material samples, lighting specifications, and a fully itemized written proposal. Every line broken out, no markup hidden in vague allowances.

03

Fabrication & Installation

Steel fabrication happens in our shop. Stone, concrete, and substructure work happens on site. M|R Walls panels arrive from California and get installed against the engineered framework we’ve already built. Concealed plumbing, filtration, and lighting are integrated as the piece comes together — not added after.

04

Reveal, Tuning & Long-Term Care

Water features need acoustic tuning on completion — flow rate, splash containment, sound quality. We adjust on site until the piece sounds and looks the way it was designed to. Then we hand off documentation, train you on the systems, and stay reachable for the life of the piece.

Frequently Asked

What DFW homeowners ask about water features.

Do you install authentic M|R Walls by Mario Romano?

Yes. We install authentic M|R Walls — the CNC-carved Corian® water feature wall system designed by Mario Romano. The panels are fabricated in California and shipped to us for installation against engineered substructure we build in our DFW shop. We work directly with the M|R Walls team on pattern selection, sizing, and technical specification for each project.

Can you add a water feature to a pool we already have?

Yes — most of our water feature work is standalone, added to existing pools or installed independently on the property. The honest conversation upfront is whether your existing pool’s plumbing, electrical, and structural systems can support the water feature you’re considering. Sometimes we tie in cleanly. Sometimes the existing pool needs a small upgrade to handle the addition. We’ll tell you which during the consultation.

What does a custom architectural water feature actually cost?

It depends entirely on scope, materials, and engineering complexity. As a rough framework: a custom sphere or bowl feature typically starts around $15,000–$40,000. A sculpted water wall (including substructure, plumbing, and finish) runs $35,000–$150,000+. An authentic M|R Walls installation depends on the panel sizing and pattern selected, but generally falls between $50,000 and $200,000+ including engineering and install. Fire-and-water combinations sit at the top of the range because of the additional gas and electrical work required.

How long does an architectural water feature project take?

Plan on 8–16 weeks from contract to completion for most standalone water feature projects, depending on scope. M|R Walls panels have their own fabrication lead time in California — typically 6–10 weeks — which runs concurrently with the substructure work we build on site. Fire-and-water combinations and pool-integrated features can run longer when permitting and gas inspections are involved.

Do you work with our architect, interior designer, or landscape architect?

Yes — and we frequently do. Most architectural water feature projects involve coordination with one or more design professionals already engaged on the home. We slot into that team rather than fighting for control of it. We attend design meetings, review and respect existing drawings, coordinate finish-level details with your design team’s specifications, and bring our engineering and fabrication capabilities to whatever direction the design is heading.

What materials do you typically work in for water features?

Depends on the design. M|R Walls pieces are CNC-carved Corian® solid surface. Original sculpted water walls are typically stacked stone, board-formed concrete, or large-format porcelain over engineered steel substructure. Sphere features are acrylic, polished stainless steel, or bronze. Fire-rim work involves gas-rated stainless steel, refractory materials, and concealed ignition. Every material gets specified for the environment it’ll live in — indoor, outdoor covered, or fully exposed.

How do you handle maintenance and long-term care?

Architectural water features need three things to age well: clean water chemistry, periodic mechanical inspection, and someone reachable when something goes wrong. We design the systems to be serviceable from concealed access points so future maintenance doesn’t require demolition. We document every system in your handover binder. And we stay reachable — most of our high-end water feature clients keep us on speed dial for the life of the piece.

Can you fabricate original water features rather than installing existing designs?

Yes. Roughly half of our architectural water feature work is original — designed in collaboration with the homeowner, their architect, or our team. We design, engineer, fabricate the steel substructure, and finish the piece on site. The other half is installation of designed pieces like M|R Walls, which require the same engineering and finishing capabilities but skip the design stage.
